The Moby Wrap & Baby Bjorn

I wish I was introduced to the Moby Wrap when Jayden was an infant because the Baby Bjorn was too painful on my shoulders. I really liked the Baby Bjorn at first but once Jayden started getting bigger it was too painful on my shoulders that after a while Adam was the only one who would use it. Adam has no complaints about the Baby Bjorn and he recommends it to many new fathers. For me, I now recommend the Moby Wrap. It is comfortable, convenient and really distributes that babies weight as evenly as possible.

Update: Please read the comments posted by Maria. She is full of knowledge and offered some of her favorite baby carriers as well.

The only thing I would caution a new parent on with the Bjorn is that it has been shown to cause hip and lower back problems in some babies due to all pressure being on the crotch. There are similar style carriers that do not apply this pressure that might be more preferable. The others also have much more comfortable straps, which I can attest to (I own a lot of carriers...sad, but true). I can send you a link to one of the better articles on the study if you are interested. :)

Maria,

Personally I do not like the Bjorn (I did like the concept but then once using it it was too much for me). I have already had one major back surgery, I don't want another one! And I know you are reliable with your information - so which do you recommend? What's your favorite carrier/sling?

My favorite is the Beco Butterfly. It is similar to the Bjorn, but the position of the baby is different (butt lower than knees) so the pressure is distributed. It also has a waist band to make it easier to carry-- think more of a hiking backpack mixed with the moby wrap you liked. A similar carrier is the Ergo. Both come in masculine colors/patterns, as well as more traditional feminine and gender neutral.

The Butterfly has an insert for infants, so you can use it basically from birth through forty pounds. The Ergo does as well, though the position of the infant is slightly different.

I have the Butterfly (a hot sling, ring sling, mei tai and formerly a Bjorn), and I still wear TB in it. I didn't find out about the Bjorn until The Boy was a little older, and I wish someone had told me. Anyway back on topic...

There are pictures from Italy last year of him sleeping in it on facebook if you want to see, and I have to say, I did not tire of carrying him even though he was around 30 pounds. It took me a while to figure out why my legs were tired the next day (an extra 30 pounds will do that to a person)...but nothing else felt sore or uncomfortable at all!

For both the Ergo and Butterfly can be worn on the front (any age) or back (older).

You know...in case you ever have another. ;-)

Oh, and The Moby is a great one. I put TB in it at my friend's house and if I had another one, I would get a wrap. ;-)
